About Nut Ivory
For people who cares about others and the earth.
Pumping through my veins is a constant awe for nature. I can only come to one conclusion, that a supreme being created this earth so perfectly. By merely looking at the ecological system, one can see the intricate designs, vibrant colors, and unique shapes not even an artist has been able to reproduce. Every day marketers and activist give me thousands of reasons as to why I should recycle and use the earth’s resources wisely. Their sales pitches say I should do so for the next generation, so as to pass a brighter earth down to the eager faces of tomorrow. Unfortunately my generation has not taken this issue to heart, or become aware of the growing need to care for our home planet.
I have the fortune of having three sons, each with their own unique personality and interests. Santiago has a tender heart. He is always willing to help disadvantaged people. Mateo has a high sense of design and ability to communicate with others through subliminal channels. Felipe has the resiliency to overcome the barriers of personal comfort in favor of protecting the environment. His passion, respect, and dedication to discovering new ways to contribute to the safe keeping of our planet is convicting. Recently, in a heated discussion, I said that in 20 years many of his peers’ ideals would have succumbed to nothing more than ideas, just as our generation has dropped many of our own. Over the next hour, Felipe washed my brain, corrected my thinking, and gave me many eye opening reasons as to why this movement to care for our planet is going to take root.
Essentially human beings have the need to belong. When we are able to connect people with a cause, such as caring for the environment, we are able to tap into this strong desire. When this happens people are more likely to contribute to a cause because they belong to it. There are now many young people with the desire to protect our environment. With the creation of mass media, like the internet, young people have been able to create a collective consciousness that transcends local boundaries. They have access to millions of ways to connect people and form groups, which inevitably creates the platform for change. Felipe’s generation still has the passion, vision, energy, and desire to make a change. They are still willing to perform acts of generosity for whatever they believe in. With all the right tools in their hands they are able to convert their ideas into realities. The motto “Go Green” is not just a slogan to Felipe; it is an act of leadership. By going green he is able to be on the forefront of change. In every young person concerned about the environment, there is a leader with the ability to create change starting with his or her immediate environment, called family.
The process of passing down knowledge, or teaching, is normally delivered from parents to their children. For years I talked to my children about loving others and read articles to them about the environment. Although I was brought up always thinking about the wise use of resources, no one raised awareness in me, about the environment, as Felipe did. That happened for one simple reason, as a parent, I listen to the interests of my children. We do this to stay connected to them. We engage ourselves in their personal concerns, and it is for this reason that I invite all young people interested in environmental or philanthropic work to reverse the educational process. Young people today are responsible for educating their parents on the need to pass on a greener world because this is the only way for them to inherit a healthy planet.
Nut ivory was born from the desire to reflect some of the values that connect me with my children. By combining design and fashion, with awareness about the environment and care for others, I am able to encompass the interests of each of my sons. Tagua is a biodegradable material, ecological, sustainable, and almost 100% usable. We donate a portion of our sales to non-profit organizations that support a good cause.
I chose a piece of my collection to symbolize that I care about people and the earth. I call it “Nature and Life”. The outer nut symbolizes Mother Nature or a mother’s womb. The round seed inside symbolizes life, the child, and the earth. The two elements are linked by the umbilical cord which makes them dependent on each other. Giving this piece of jewelry is a way to connect generations with each other by sharing personal interests. Each time women, mothers, and grandmothers look at this piece of jewelry they are able to lovingly remember the person who gave them this gift as well as its meaning. If only a few people are able to engage others in these ideas, my children and I can say that we did something to make the world more eco-friendly, generous, and fashion-forward. We stopped imagining a better world and created a better one.

Read the message, then read it again in reverse.
Which generation do you belong in?
I am part of a lost generation
and I refuse to believe that
I can change the world
I realize this may be a shock but
“Happiness comes from within.”
is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy.”
So in 30 years I will tell my children
they are not the most important thing in my life
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
is more important than
I tell you this
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
but this will not be true in my era
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
30 years from now, I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making
In the future
Environmental destruction will be the norm
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this earth
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.
And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it .
Join me to reverse the teaching process!!!
